Question: Who knows about starting a computer repair or consultant business?

Lately i been considering starting up my own computer repair business or computer consultany business, Im working toward an associate degree even as i speak. Im good with computers but I.m not sure what kind of license or certification i need in order to start up one, can anyone give me some suggestions or helpful tips.

First off you need to complete your degree and then focus solely on setting up your business. I cannot comment on the consultancy side of things but on the computer repair business I'd advise you to enrol on a small business course to learn about all the ins and outs of running a small business. Next, or at the same time, you need to start advertising both locally and on the Internet – depending on the type of repair business you intend to set up of course as you could do online repairs or offer advisory support over the net (a bit like the techs at PC World, etc do – you may want to look at this site: computer-repaircenter.com). If your good at something and really enjoy doing it then this is the best line of business you can get into as your enjoyment and enthusiasm for the work will shine through and be appreciated by your clients. It is a lot easier doing computer repair because John Doe will give you a call. Look at ads for computer repair in phone book or local newspapers and see what they have in their ad that they felt would bring in customers. Computer consulting is going to be very tough. Then John Doe Inc. is your main customer. Then you deal with signed contracts that attorneys have approved. And starting out is very tough for computer consulting. Many potential clients will have an important project. Many clients will want more than just one person working for the company. They have budgets and timelines and not many will want a one person show. It draws on one persons talent while a computer consulting firm of ten geeks with have a better chance.

Licensing is a local thing - check with your city, county, etc. Some places require you to jump through hoops, others don't care. Some don't allow you to run any business out of your home, some just don't allow you to have customers parking all over the street.
