How do I lock my wireless access from others’ tapping

I am using 1mbps of wireless accessing the Vodafone network via a mobile broadband device (USB portable).
I find the connection during the daytime is extremely painstaking at time as I had to reconnect each time the signal become zero with 0kbps download speed. At night from 10 to 12am its neither that good either.
Somehow from 2 to 4am however, the connection seems to be so smooth and fast. I had try to clean and repair the registry and things seems much better now.
Can you advise me are there any ways to prevent illegal tappings from others on my network? I heard about this before and can you recommend any good sofrware links?
Any information will be most helpful particularly on getting strong signal.
