How do I remove registry references to removed applications?

I don’t want to manually regedit search and destroy references to programs I’ve removed. Can’t registry cleaners do that for me?

    CCleaner does it. Microsoft’s RegClean does it. (CCleaner does more than just that.) They’re both free.
