Is there a safe way I can repair my damaged DVD+RW drive on my computer without having to pay anything extra?

    Replace it yourself. DVD drives are cheap these days. I’m assuming you have a desktop. A laptop’s DVD drive cannot be replaced. (Wrong answer as it turns out. I’ll let this answer stand lest I be accused of being a know-it-all)

    Addendum: After doing some research, I’ve found that your problem is likely a software glitch in the Windows OS and your DVD drive might be OK. Here are some sites that might be of help:

    The above entry is not correct. In the case of most laptops you can remove the drive. There should be a switch on the bottom of the laptop that allows you to pull it out. Before trying to get a registry cleaner you should try removing the drive and putting it back in. That might force windows to pick it back up.

    You can also look for a free registry cleaner on sites like download.com.
